LESSON 17
An English family on the way to Chile, spent a few hours here, and begged me to take them singht-seeing, which I did with pleasure.
I went to meet them at the quay, and we passed through the Custom-house, where the officials were busy examining trunks.
We took a taxi by the hour, and I told the chauffeur to drive slowly up the Avenida Rio Branco, so that the visitors could appreciate the life and mevement; the endless lines of cars and buses; the pedestrians; some hurrying along, others sauntering, idly watching those passing up and down.
We passed the School of Fine Arts, the Municipal Theatre and the Nacional Library, finally arriving at the picture-houses with their sky-scrapers, at the end of the Avenida, at Floriano Square. From Floriano Square we went to the Espalnada to see the new Government offices that are being built; they are very fine, each one seeming to outshine the other in size and style.
My friends found everything very interesting, and were sorry not to be able to stay longer; I took them to walk through Ouvidor Street and Gonçalves Dias Street, where we took tea at the Colombo. The tea room was gay with many people, and a good orchestra was playing.
After tea, we went for a drive out to Copacabana, as far as the fort, there were many people bathing, especially at post 2,4, and 6. My friends found Copacabana wonderful.
Unfortunately, we could not delay there, as the steamer was leaving at eight o'clock, so I saw my friends safely back on board, very satisfied with their short visit to Rio, and hoping to make a longer stay on their way back, as they wish to visit the Sugar-loaf, and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which on the top of Concorvado mountain.
