The bazaars seem do be a success; at all hours of the day, there are people going in and out, and the shopgirls are kept busy serving them, wrapping up their goods into large or smaill parcels, and giving change.

At the bazaars, you can find many useful odds and ends; they are all very cheap although now the bazaars are no longer two cruzeiros shops; their prices have gone up very much; but, of course, the goods are of reliable quality. These shops are always receiving novelties.

At Christmans time, it is very difficult to get seved, unless you go very early, as the cheap toys attract many people, who wish to buy as much as they can for little money.

At the lunch hour, many people fill up their spare moments by taking a walk through the bazaars; one in Ouvidor Street is very small, but the other has been enlarged, and is a fine shop. There working-classes profit much by the bazaars, on account of the cheapness and the variety of articles.

Some time ago, a terrible fire broke out in one of the bazaars; many poor people lost their lives, while others were so burnt that their hands became deformed and useless. It seems that the lights of the Xmas tree caught the celluloid of the toys, setting fire to them with this terrible result.
