LESSON 08

The dining-room is the room where we take our meals. the furniture consists of a table, which may be round, oval, oblong, or square; several chairs, a sideboard, and a glass-cupboard.

The servant is laying the table for dinner: first, she lays a white cloth on the table and puts napkins for everybody; she puts plates, knives, forks, and spoons for each person. Beside each plate she puts glasses for water and wine.

The bread is cut in pieces and placed in the bread-basket. The water-jug is on the table, the salt-cellar, and the cruet-stand also.

On the sideboard, we see the dessert-plates, the fruit-dish with several kinds of fruit, the coffe-cups, the cheese-dish, some biscuits, and the liqueurs.

To-day, the dinner consist of Soup, Boiled Fish, Veal Cutlets, Baked Potatoes, Spinach, and Roast Chicken. For dessert, there are Caramel Pudding, Vanilla Ices, and Fruits.

After dinner, the gentlemen remain smoking in the dining-room, while the ladies retire to the drawing-room, where the gentlemen join them later.
