Nearly every year there is a season for the Opera in Rio, except when financial conditions are very bad, when the companies do not care to risk losing time, without making money.

Formerly, we often had the visit of English and German companies, but, for some time now, we have not had any. Many variety artistes come for the shows at the casinos; generally from the United States.
The French Comedy usually makes a short stay, and when the pieces are good, and suitable for young girls, they are well-appreciated, as most of the young girls speak French.
Portugueze and Spanish companies come occasionally, with comedies or light operas, and they generally get a good reception.
The National Theatre consists chiefly of revues, not always suitable for young girls, or for people with refined tastes; the company of Procopio Ferreira, which occpies one of the theatres during several months of the year, is patronised by the good families; as most of the pieces played by that company, ca be seen and appreciated by young and old.
There are several other companies which give a season of light comedy every year, but nowadays, the movies seem to be more appreciated than the theatre.
